Not only did the png upgrade work for me ( very well after my initial scare, thanks Spider ), but it was your option to upgrade the png libs. |
2 |
I picked Gentoo because it let's me stay on the bleeding edge, and there are consequences that you pay for at the bleeding edge, consequences that I'm willing to live with, but apparently you are not. |
3 |
There are rationales for why this was required and I think Spider expressed them well. No one wants to waste anyone's time, but that is a side effect of libpng not of Gentoo or it's maintainers. |

You may have opinions about the state of open-source and free software, but I hope they're not based solely on this one experience and strictly in a Windows vs. Linux mentality. Every OS experiences some level of DLL hell and Windows has more of it's own fair share. I look only to the sad IDE that VS6.0 was to think back to my own experiences. |
5 |
Frankly, I don't understand why anyone would pick Gentoo if they're not willing to put the effort forth. You want a fairly optimized, well maintained system that doesn't let you get into trouble, pick Mandrake, pick Debian, pick any of the binary only distributions. |
6 |
Not to mention that they're all much more mature than Gentoo, having been through many revisions apiece. Remember, you wanted in on the ground floor. |

Sorry, enough ranting. |

Hello, |
87 |
|
88 |
i must say that instructions for updating libpng worked smoothly (for me |
89 |
that is). Also majority of complaints posted here come from KDE people |
90 |
and are related to simple fact that they have to recompile bigger part |
91 |
fo their systems and that they dont like it ( hehe i wouldnt either :) |
92 |
). |
