Doh! The last one was the problem. Now, it gets a lot farther, but still has
a problem, as well as some weirdness:

First, unlike previous LiveCDs, this version doesn't look for SCSI unless
the doscsi parameter is passed to the kernel at boot time. Nearly all Alphas
do their disk via SCSI. Is there a defined way to make doscsi the default,
or should I just include it when building the aboot configuration file?

Second, /linuxrc reports that hardware has been found if the module is
present, regardless of whether the hardware is actually present and
regardless of whether the module actually loaded. This is mainly a nuisance.

Third, and biggest: Why is PAM blowing up? This is almost certainly why the
root user isn't automatically logged in and given the ability to proceed
with the installation.
