perhaps your bootloader can't accept a compressed initrd,
try setting COMPRESS_INITRD=no in your genkernel's config.sh
for your arch. Other than that

Also, make sure you kernel has loopback, and ramdisk support
with a default ram disk size of 8192, as well as Initial
RAM disk (initrd) support turned on.
