For gnome-libs 1.4.2:

./configure --help | grep esd
  --with-esd-prefix=PFX   Prefix where ESD is installed (optional)
  --with-esd-exec-prefix=PFX Exec prefix where ESD is installed (optional)
  --disable-esdtest       Do not try to compile and run a test ESD program

Of which switch are you speaking?
