FYI this is not just a problem with crappy old monitors.... It's also a 
problem with my (much older) laptop, and any other screen that has problems 
with certain resolutions. 

It only took me about 3 reboots to figure out the problem.. :-) Perhaps 
another part to the help screen saying "If you don't have a display after 
booting, try acpi=no and, if all else fails, nofb."

There will always be problems for SOME people - the best that can be hoped for 
is to describe the problems better and catch them as they struggle.
