9 The main problem that I see with you suggestion is that it will cause a larger change in the default behavior of the resolver. By minimizing the change in behavior, it reduces the changes that people will complain and/or file bugs. Another reason is that the build time dependencies will have to be merged anyway the next time that the corresponding packages are updated from source, so it's likely to be for efficient if they are already installed. So, the groups that I imagine would be interested in pruning the build time deps are those that need to have absolute minimal space consumption and those who have no intention of ever building updates from source. I'd guess that those groups make up a minority of gentoo users.
