Howdy, |

|
3 |
I'm new to Gentoo, and I'm trying to install it on an iBook to play |
4 |
with. I currently have Debian on a partition. |
5 |
|
6 |
My iBook is a 366 Indigo, and the cdrom doesn't read burnt cds. Is |
7 |
there a way to bootstrap the install from the hard drive, a la Debian |
8 |
and OpenBSD? |
9 |
|
10 |
For example, to install debian I can copy some filesystem images, a |
11 |
couple of kernels, yaboot and yaboot.conf to a 100MB hfs "bootstrap" |
12 |
partition, then boot to openfirmware, and boot with "boot hd:,yaboot". |
13 |
Then I can hit tab and choose "install" to boot to the install, or later |
14 |
"vmlinux" to boot my linux partition. I can also do a "boot hd:,ofwboot |
15 |
bsd.rd" and boot to the OpenBSD installer kernel with ramdisk install |
16 |
image. |
17 |
|
18 |
I would like to try Gentoo, I was delighted to find that it supported |
19 |
PPC after Mandrake and Suse abandoned it. Yellowdog also does not |
20 |
support this type of install that I have seen. After scouring over a |
21 |
year of posts on the mailing list archives, I can't find any clues as to |
22 |
what I could copy to a bootstrap partition, or how to install this way. |
23 |
My partition is big enough to put the minimal cloop image if that would |
24 |
work. |
25 |
|
26 |
In Linux land, there has to be someone other than Debian users who |
27 |
figured out how to bootstrap a Mac with no floppy or bootable cd :) |
28 |
|
29 |
I have never thought seriously about netbooting, but maybe that would be |
30 |
my only option... |
31 |
|
32 |
I will do some lurking on #gentoo-ppc as lincr if anybody wants to chat. |
33 |
|
34 |
Thanks, |
35 |
