7 There are actually some very good reasons to do software RAID. As
8 pointed out by others, if you are not CPU bound then it is just as fast
9 as hardware RAID. Additionally, it removes reliance on a single
10 hardware vendor. With hardware RAID if your RAID card dies you need to
11 replace it with the same card, with software raid the hardware is
12 irrelevant. The disks can be moved to a different box with completely
13 different hardware.

15 If you are going to do RAID5, though, I would seriously consider
16 hardware RAID. With RAID0, 1, 10, and 01, software raid can do quite well.
