I've heard this discussion a few times before. I think we should find out what |
17 |
this zeroconf does that makes it so smart, meanwhile we should figure out |
18 |
different ways to solve the problem so that we have multiple ways to achive |
19 |
the goal, maybe there are environments where zeroconf doesn't work(?). |
20 |
|
21 |
The problem is, as far as I understand, to find a way to get the initial |
22 |
installation configuration when booting a computer for the first time from |
23 |
(cd, floppy, usbdrive or harddrive?). The candidates are currently.: |
24 |
|
25 |
*zeroconf |
26 |
-(requirements? IPv4/IPv6 network? mac-address?) |
27 |
-[please fill in here] |
28 |
*dhcp |
29 |
-minimum requirement: a mac-address |
30 |
*bootp |
31 |
-minimum requirement |
32 |
*fixed gold-server address (ie. gold-server is always located at 10.0.0.123) |
33 |
|
34 |
|
35 |
I think we need to make several approches to achive a allround solution. If |
36 |
this is the situation then there are a few options (as I see it :) |
37 |
|
38 |
*To make a distribution that tries every thinkable method for discovering the |
39 |
gold-server. (probably very noisy on the network, but probably very |
40 |
effective) |
41 |
*To make a distribution that needs user intervention (ie. set the address for |
42 |
the gold-server manually) |
43 |
*To make a distribution that just does it the right way (ie. if zeroconf works |
44 |
out magic:) |
45 |
|
46 |
Sorry for my poor english :| |
