Hmm... do you get a different result with, for example, CFLAGS="-Os 
-march=athlon-xp -pipe"?

Yes, I know I'm being a bit of a torch-and-pitchfork type here, but if 
changing the CFLAGS *doesn't* solve anything, I'm perfectly willing to 
dig deeper. ;)
