14 I had a similar challenge. But it is quite easy to overcome. After the backups just untar the latest stage3 to your root filesystem. Then sync portage and emerge world with a empty tree and keep-going flags. It should get it done mostly. Few packages might fail to merge, but after the world update the list should be fairly short and manageable. You might need to emerge -C few packages, but it's ok.
