9 Thanks for your help in this matter. Your advice allowed me to locate
10 the exact error, and after some searching I believe that I have found
11 the cause of the problem. It is the issue of not using UDEV.

17 Because I don't know how to reconfigure the ebuild to use a patched
18 source I'll have to wait until the maintainer gets around to applying
19 the patch.

21 Once again, my decision to avoid the (to me) unnecessary complications
22 of UDEV has got me into trouble. It seems that developers just assume
23 that everyone uses UDEV and they will, inadvertently or otherwise, overlook
24 those few who choose not to do so. I just wonder how long I'll be able
25 to exercise this choice.
