Don't feel bad, I don't use udev either but use eudev.  Some opted to
use mdev too.  Digest command:

ebuild path/to/ebuild manifest/digest

Naturally that is from memory and replace the relevant parts.  You may
need manifest for one or digest but structure is the same.  Actually, I
think they both do the same thing after a quick glance at man ebuild. 
Should get you started tho.

Keep in mind, after you sync, busted again unless you put it in a
overlay.  If you don't sync often, you may not care tho.  May even be
properly fixed by then.
